We at Lochmead Dairy have become increasingly concerned that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may ban the use of polycarbonate in food packaging, which is used to make our "merlon" bottles. Since there is a chance that the FDA may change their position on the use of polycarbonate, or that others may decide to discontinue using polycarbonate packaging, we have decided not to purchase additional "merlon" bottles. As a result, our "merlon" inventory is very low and we are slowly phasing them out of production.

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends three daily servings of low-fat and fat-free milk and milk products for those ages nine and older. On average, Americans are currently consuming about 2 dairy servings a day. Adding one more serving of dairy can help fill some of America’s nutritional gaps. Remember that milk and cheese are the leading sources of calcium in our diet.

Are you taking your Valentine out for a special meal...or staying in and making a romantic meal for two? Worried about post-meal garlic breath? There's help. A recent study published in the Journal of Food Science suggests that drinking milk when consuming garlic can reduce the concentrations of the compounds in the garlic that are responsible for the embarrassing "garlic breath".

As a mom of a 4th grader, I, like the rest of you, am concerned with what my child is consuming while at school. Working for a dairy, I get approached quite often with people's questions and concerns about milk. On the first day of school, my son's principal came up to me and started the conversation of... "How do we get flavored milk out of our school?" I knew the best way to have this conversation would be providing some research for her to peruse and digest.

As an affiliate member of Quality Chekd Dairies, we were awarded – for the third straight year – a 2010 Superior rating on our processing plant based on a third party audit. At the conference in Dallas, Texas we were also awarded a Merit of Excellence for our ice cream quality.

At the recent 2010 Oregon Dairy Industries Annual Conference in Salem, Oregon, Lochmead's fluid milk, buttermilk, and ice cream competed against the other dairies in the state. We are happy to announce that we earned the top recognition in the fluid milk division, taking the Sweepstakes Award.
