Q: Why does the Half & Half look a little separated in my coffee at times?
A: Lochmead Half & Half is just fresh milk and cream. There is no stabilizer added, like you’ll find in other Half & Half. Since ours contains a little higher fat, sometimes there is a little separation when you add it to your hot beverage.
Q: Why isn’t Lochmead Farms milk organic?
A: Our goal is to provide our customers with the freshest tasting, highest quality milk at affordable prices. Although we have not actively sought organic certification, Lochmead takes great care in everything we do, including herd management, manufacturing practices, and product development. Please see our sustainability section for more information.
Q: Are the reusable half-gallon merlon bottles made of polycarbonate with bisphenol A (BPA)?
A: Yes, our reusable bottles are currently made of polycarbonate, which contains bisphenol A (BPA). Research shows that BPA is most likely to leach when bottles are heated in the microwave or exposed to sunlight. Since our bottles contain only milk, which must be stored in a cool, dark refrigerator in order to retain its flavor, there is little chance of BPA leaching into our dairy products. Since this is a concern for many who prefer the reusable container, we are in the process researching a plastic that is as sturdy as polycarbonate, but does not contain BPA.
Q: Why not use glass bottles?
A: For our distribution size, glass is not a practical option. Glass poses a risk for our operators and drivers. Also, the additional weight of glass would require much more energy to transport.
Q: Where did the name Lochmead come from?
A: With the family's Scottish heritage, they decided to use the words Loch, which means large lake, and Mead, meaning meadow, to describe the original homestead that they lived and farmed on. Today we tend the same beautiful land.
